LEDs could save US $37 bn in energy costs

MAY 9, 2013

An overnight switch to LEDs could save the US $37 billion in annual energy costs, according to a report by the US Department of Energy (DoE).

The report states 49 million LED lamps and luminaires were installed in nine lighting applications in 2012 and saved $675 million in energy costs across these markets that year. However, the document said if these nine lighting applications began using 100 per cent LEDs overnight, as much as half the country’s total lighting energy consumption in 2012 could have been saved ($37 billion), This equates to annual source energy savings of 3,873 trillion British thermal units (tBtu).

How to Add Radiant Floor Heating to a Bathroom

MAY 15, 2013

Radiant heat is an effective, energy efficient way to heat bathroom floors
and will make the room more comfortable. Radiant heating systems are designed to be installed underneath bathroom floors and provide heat only when needed. While originally designed for use with tile floors exclusively, heating solutions for other types of flooring are now available.

Types

Hydronic systems circulate heated water through coils under the floor to provide heat. This type of radiant heating system is affordable, provides long heat retention and is easy to install. Electric radiant systems heat electric coils inside of tubing under the floor. Electric systems can be more expensive to operate, depending on current energy costs. Air radiant heat is the least energy efficient choice because the amount of heat that can be carried through air is very low
